About the injury

This blog was started in order to keep friends and family members informed on the condition of Francisco Baires.  On June 26th Francisco and his girlfriend were mugged.  It was around 2:30am and they were walking home after an evening out.  During the assult, one of the attackers swung a blunt object and knicked Francisco’s forehead.  Francisco reacted and immediately felt pain; however, he seemed to be fine.  The attackers (two males) fled the scene (with no money).

Upon arriving to his girlfriend’s home they tended to Francisco’s bump and stayed up for several hours to make sure that he did not have a concussion.  Francisco seemed to be fine as he talked, walked and even read a little to pass the time.  At 6am they decided to go ahead and go to sleep.

At 7:30am his girlfriend decided to get up.  She noticed that Francisco was not in bed, so she got up and decided to check up on him.  She found him in the restroom passed out face down on the floor and he was nonresponsive.  After checking vital signs, she was able to assess his condition and immediate determine that he had a head injury.  911 was called and he was rushed to the ER.  Upon arrival a CT scan was ordered…the results revealed that he had a large hematoma which was causing pressure and swelling to the brain.  As a result Francisco was rushed off to surgery where underwent a craniotomy in order to drain the blood.

At 12:30pm arrived to the Trama/Surgical ICU at University Medical Center in Tucson.  Francisco was not showing an change in responsiveness.  Throughout the day, the Glasgow Coma Scale was used to evalutated his condition.  There was no eye response or verbal response based on the scales.  One eye was dilating when exposed to light and the other was completely fixed and not reacting.  On the motor response he was at the bottom of the scale…no movement.

At 6:30pm Francisco was taken in for his 2nd CT Scan.  The scans looked a lot better compared to the first one, but Francisco was not showing any changes in his condition.  He was on a ventilator and a feeding tube.  During this time his temperature started to rise and there was some concern that this might be due to damage to the brain stem.  Meds to lower the temperature and reduce the swelling of the brain were ordered.  The meds for the swelling were administered, but Francisco was able to bring down his temperature on his own, which was a good sign.

At the end of June 26th the medical staff informed the family that the journey ahead would not be a sprint but a marathon.  There was still a lot of unknowns and each hour would bring about something new.  The journey ahead is a long one and it is my prayer that each of us can learn something about ourselves and each other during this journey that make us better people.  I say that because I know that is what my brother would want.

  • Some really nice news to report – Veronica and I spent the past few hours with Francisco, and he made my heart go pitter-patter. After telling him a bit about our day, I coyly asked him to show me his pretty eyes. “Come on, I dare ya. Open your eyes. You can hear me, I know you can. Show em to me…” As per my request, his eyelashes fluttered, and then, his right eyelid gradually pulled back – completely on his own – to reveal his handsome eyes. There’s no question that he heard me. Veronica joined in, and we spent an hour or so getting him to open and close his right eye. Veronica also held his right hand, asking him to squeeze. Though he couldn’t yet clench his fist, he did move his fingers, wrapping them around her own. As we spent time talking to him, his blood pressure lowered dramatically, going down to 115/54, and his temperature also stabilized. I just wanted to share this with everyone, because I truly felt Francisco’s presence tonight; I know he’s there, he’s listening, and he can’t wait to share his handsome smile with everyone. XOXO Lara

  • From the very moment Francisco and I met, we felt each other in our bones. He is my greatest blessing and I am so incredibly thankful to have made his acquaintance. Although this experience has been difficult for me and everyone who knows and loves him, I have faith that this has happened for a reason.

I love this man wholly and completely. He has become my strength and my vulnerability. Here is a poem that Francisco and I have read and reread to each other; e.e. cummings seemed to have experienced something similar…

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
    i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

  • To Francisco’s family and all who love him and care for him:

I am so sorry to hear this. And I send my prayers and thoughts and merit that he will recover soon, that he will wake up from this, no more than a brief delay.

What I know is that he is good and is needed here, is wanted. We can use our hearts as though they were a single voice. We can visit him in our sleep–and whisper him back. This is the way we can sing him home. And the music of all this love will become the bridge he returns on.

  • Franky

You have so much love and so many people pulling for you, it’s incredible. I know you feel the power of that love and prayer coming your way. It will help sustain you and all your family during this most difficult time. God be with you. Love, Aunt Cherry

  • Franky, when we moved to Brownsville back in 1986 you were 8 years old. One of the customs of the Hispanic culture is greeting friends and family with hugs and kisses. You were always a very friendly and affectionate kid and wanted to hug and kiss me (on the cheek ofcourse) every time you saw “Uncle Larry”. This practice annoyed me greatly and I had to fight you off every time I saw you! Over the years you gradually gave up on trying to give your Crazy Gringo Uncle Larry kisses. However, if you’ll promise to limit them to the “ear area only” I give you permission to give both hugs and kisses to your now “Crazy Old Uncle Larry”.
Franky, I’m very proud of you – you’ve obviously worked hard and have accomplished much. I’m praying for you (many times) daily and keeping my motorcycle riding friends, who are also praying for you, updated on your progress. I’ve been praying for a miracle, and we’ve already seen one in progress. Remember that God loves you and your Uncle Larry does, too!

    Get well soon Franky!

We, here in Nashville, want to let you all know that we are praying for you, Franky and for your entire family. We love your family and have known you, through them, for many years. Only the Lord knows any of our endings to the stories of our lives and He is more than capable of doing above and beyond what we think or pray. We pray that you will be surrounded by His presence and uplifted by the prayers and support of His people and that one day soon we will all be able to rejoice in the victories He has wrought in you and your family and those you will impact through this trial in your life. Pam and Ivette, I will be praying for strength and endurance for you both.

To the toughest of the tough; the bravest of the brave. I truly admire your strength and determination. My thoughts and prayers as well as my girlfriend, Shana’s, are with you.

Frankie, bro I want you know that I remember all those cool times when I would see you in Houston. We would compare notes and try and cheer each other up. I want you to know that seeing you and talking with you really helped me many times. It was often a low time in my life back then and those random lonley times when I walked into a bar or club were better when I would see you.
You would tell me about some of your challenges at that time and I would try to offer a postive ear and comment. I hope that helped you a bit as well. I consider you a friend though we have not been able to talk for many years. I consider you a real friend though we technically met through your sister’s relationship/marriage to my cousin Daniel. I have been extremely proud to learn that you were getting through college and now graduate school. That takes so much determination and drive. This is why I am completely confident that you will overcome this much like you have overcome other obstacles in your life because you rock. You are amazing and I wish you the best. You might have to be patient at times for a little while, but see many great things for you in your future!!

Sorry for the book lol :)
I will be posting comments and keeping in touch now that I know about this journal.
I just now learned of this tonight, My parents also send thier thoughts and prayers, they did not know we were friends or that I knew you personally. Please excuse the delay.

I would like to send my thoughts and prayers for you and your sister and your mom.
I would like to also thank Pam for this special easy- to-understand and easy-to-use journal.

Frankie, I know you are resting alot for now but
you can call me if you want for fun, for something new to do, or …if you need to talk.
feel free to leave a message if I can’t pick up and I will call back.
